Tom Flynn ’79 to Compete in the Dancing with the Stars Finals

Mr. Tom Flynn will be among six contestants competing in this week’s Gloucester County flynn pixDancing with the Stars finals at Auletto’s Ballroom on Thursday, September 25, starting at 6 p.m.

Mr. Flynn will represent Gloucester Catholic’s Athletic Fields campaign as one of six charities to take part in the competition. The long-time GC faculty member and 1979 GC alumnus gave students and faculty a preview of his dancing skills last Friday during the annual Fall Pep Rally in the gymnasium.

Former Lady Rams Pitcher Tricia Reiners Duer Elected to Gloucester County Sports Hall of Fame

Former Gloucester Catholic softball star Tricia Reiners Duer ’92  will be among the 16 new inductees to the Gloucester County Sports Hall of Fame during the 34th Annual Induction Banquet on March 25,2014 at Auletto’s Caterers in Almonesson, the Executive Committee has announced.

This year’s inductees also include: Joe Crispin (Pitman), Jon Crispin (Pitman), Marilyn Stetser Bennette (Clearview), Mel Carter (Kingsway), Chuck Lamson (Woodbury), Colleen Kelly Kolb (Washington Twp.), Chris Ianacone (Delsea), Vince Nestore (Deptford), Fred Swartz (Gloucester CC), Bill Hunt (Williamstown), William Kneller (Paulsboro), Joe Cugini (Clayton), Scott Wagner (Clearview) and Dino Hall (Glassboro State).

One of South Jersey’s top pitchers in the late 1980s and early 1990’s, this Wenonah native hurled the Lady Rams to a pair of NJSIAA Non-Public B state softball championships in 1990 and 1991. This effort continued a streak where Gloucester Catholic captured four state crowns in a five-year stretch from 1987 to 1991.

She later starred at St. John’s University as one of the top pitchers in school history before graduating in 1997.

Cheryl Kulesa Clark Inducted Into Al Carino Basketball Club of South Jersey Hall of Fame

Cheryl Kulesa Clark ’97 was inducted in the Al Carino Basketball Club of South Jersey Hall of Fame on Sunday, February 9, in a ceremony at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Cherry Hill.

Clark was an all-South Jersey performer in soccer and basketball. At Gloucester Catholic, she scored 1,979 career points and average 28 points per game her senior year. She earned a scholarship to Saint Joseph’s, where she enjoyed three strong seasons, and then transferred to Rutgers-Camden for her senior year and led the Scarlet Raptors to their first-ever NCAA Division III tournament bid.

Cheryl is in her ninth season as the head basketball coach at Audubon High School, and last season led the Green Wave to a school-record 17 wins.

Other inductees into the Hall of Fame were Pitman’s Joe Crispin, Wildwood coach Dave Troiano, Middle Township’s LaMarr Greer, basketball official John Pierantozzi, Sterling’s Ernest Turner, Williamstown’s Michlle Maslowski, and Shawnee’s Malik Allen

Gloucester Catholic Friends and Alumni to Be Honored on Nov. 24

Alumni and friends of Gloucester Catholic High School will be honored on Sunday, November 24, during the annual Communion Breakfast.

The Alumni Association is pleased to announce the following award winners to be honored:

John and Jackie O’Donnell Award (This award is given annually to a graduate of Gloucester Catholic who demonstrates generous service to the Gloucester Catholic school community)

Recipient: Casey Murphy, ‘99

Casey has spent the last 13 years educating, motivating, and helping students realize their potential both on and off the field of play. He has spent countless hours working with students often without pay or recognition. His commitment and contribution to the football program and the school as a whole are invaluable and he is responsible for so much more of that program’s success than he is accredited.

Dr. Frank & Catherine Kelly Award (This award is given annually to a friend of GCHS who through their good work brings honor and recognition to the school)

Recipient: John Smithson ‘64

Mr. Smithson is a graduate of the class of 1964 and has distinguished himself in many areas. He was the first lay president of St. Joseph’s University and has been instrumental recently in assisting Gloucester Catholic in our strategic planning process. By his accomplishment he has been a tremendous example of a Gloucester Catholic graduate

Thomas Stewart III Award (This is awarded to a Gloucester Catholic graduate that demonstrates selfless commitment and extraordinary service to the greater community.

Recipient: Scott Thomson, ‘90

The Chief of Police in Camden, Thomson’s career in law enforcement began in the summer of 1992 when he worked for the Avalon Police Department. After a brief stint with the Pennsauken Township Police Department, he joined the Camden Police Department as a patrol officer in 1994 and was quickly promoted to detective.

As a Camden officer, Thomson has distinguished himself in the law enforcement community. His extensive background includes serving as an expert witness in narcotics trafficking trials. His role included explaining the customs and procedures involved with drug trafficking, and informing the jury on different slang terminology used when referring to specific drugs. In 2000, he received the Camden County Narcotics Detective of the Year Award presented by the New Jersey statewide Narcotics Commanders Association.

Gloucester Catholic Alumni Association Legacy Award (Given on a random basis to recognize someone who through their dedication and commitment to Gloucester Catholic through the years have left an indelible mark on the Gloucester Catholic Community)

Recipient: Mrs. Delores Budesa

Mrs. Budesa is a long-time resident of Gloucester City and strong supporter of Gloucester Catholic her entire life. Along with her late husband Sam, she saw seven kids graduate GCHS, with the first child, Elaine, entering the school in1965. She also had 17 grandchildren, including two current students, attend Gloucester Catholic along with one great-grandchild.

The Mass begins at 9:00 am followed by breakfast. Both events will be held in the Msgr. Lucitt Hall. Tickets are $12.00 and can be purchased from Anne Barron at (856) 456-4400.

GCHS a Positive Influence for William Peranteau ’93 and His Family

Family, legacy, and community. All have been key influences for William Peranteau, MD, who grew up in Gloucester City, graduated

from Gloucester Catholic High School in 1993, and has since emerged as a respected medical professional in Philadelphia. Dr. Peranteau, who joined the staff of Children’s Hospital and the University of Pennsylvania in 2012, credits his local upbringing with his success in family life and his professional career.

Peranteau’s family has enjoyed deep roots in Gloucester City for several decades. His mom, Mrs. Mary Joyce Hughes Peranteau, a 1963 Gloucester Catholic graduate, still lives on Middlesex Street today. His grandmother, Mary Joyce, was in the first graduating class of Gloucester Catholic and also resided in Gloucester City. His dad Joseph Peranteau, passed away in the mid 1990s.

Jason Nark ’95 Wins 5 Awards for His Reporting in Philadelphia Daily News

Former GC Swimming Standout Pat Malone Earns All-Academic Honors

Rowan University’s Pat Malone, a 2010 Gloucester Catholic graduate, was selected to the Philadelphia Inquirer Men’s Swimming and Diving Academic All-Area Team.

To be nominated, student-athletes must have a 3.2 grade point average (GPA) or higher and be at least a sophomore. The teams are voted on by the sports information offices of the 28 area institutions from the Philadelphia metropolitan area.

This season, Malone earned New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) All-Conference first team honors in the 200 butterfly (1:57.12). He was a member of the All-Conference second team as a member of the 200 (1:34.08) and 400 (3:27.76) medley relays. Malone anchored both relays and swam the freestyle. He was named the NJAC Swimmer of the Week two times.

Malone had the team’s second best times in the 50 (21.29) and 100 (47.13) freestyles, the 100 (51.65) and 200 (1:57.12) butterflies and the 200 individual medley (1:56.30). In addition, he was on the Profs’ 200 (1:24.44) and 400 (3:11.20) freestyle relays and the 200 (1:34.08) and 400 (3:27.76) medley relays that had the season top times. Malone is majoring in geography

 

Ray Akers ’76 Oversees Company’s Launch into French Market

Akers Biosciences Executive Chairman Ray Akers, a 1976 Gloucester Catholic graduate, has plenty of reasons to be optimistic these days. His company, Akers Biosciences Inc., a West Deptford Township manufacturer of disposable breath alcohol detectors, has become the first U.S. company to be approved to sell breathalyzers in France.

Dr. Anthony Silvestri ’54 Honored by Gloucester Catholic Alumni Board

Dr. Anthony Silvestri, Class of 1954, was recognized by the Gloucester Catholic Alumni Asociation on Monday night, January 28 with a major honor. The Alumni Association and Gloucester Catholic Junior Senior High School, formally dedicated the high school science lab as:

“The Anthony Silvestri/Sr. Martha Mary Science Lab”

The retiring Alumni Association Board member enjoyed a long and distinguished career as a research scientist, a career in which he earned statewide and national recognition.

After he earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Villanova University in 1958 and a doctorate from Penn State in 1961, Dr. Silvestri embarked on a long career at Mobil, where he had held summer jobs as a teenager and where his father worked for many years.

Dr. Silvestri and his colleagues were among those recognized for their work in 2005 when they were inducted into the New Jersey Inventors Hall of Fame. In all, Dr. Silvestri holds 28 U.S. patents.

Dr. Silvestri, who grew up in Glassboro, has never forgotten his Gloucester Catholic roots, having served with the Alumni Association for many years and giving back on many occasions to his alma mater. He has been married to his wife Heand for more than 50 years and has two children and three grandchildren.
