Guidance News Items

Many juniors and seniors are now utilizing the Naviance system for college and career planning and/or processing applications.  An SAT prep program is included in Naviance.  Freshmen and sophomores continue to have career components embedded in their health rotation.

Now in our fourth year with PowerSchool, we are exploring the use of additional features, both internally and with our GCHS families.  The ability of students and parents to follow student progress remains the primary advantage.  Most of our parents now have accounts.  Families that would like to register should contact Mr. Reed at 856-456-4400 ext 230 or treed@gchsrams.org.

A copy of the Progress Report grades will be e-mailed to parents through the PowerAnnouncement system and mailed home to high school parents who request one and to all Junior High parents.

Printed copies of the Progess Reports will be mailed home, but only to those who request a printed copy. GCHS has made the decision to discontinue the practice of automatically mailing home progress reports and report cards, due to the availability of our PowerSchool system to parents and students. Please be sure to check PowerSchool frequently to stay abreast of your student’s progress.

Report Cards

1st Marking Period Report Cards for the 2014-2015 school year will be sent, via email, through the PowerSchool system on approximately November 10, 2014. Teachers and Administrators will be on-hand from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 18, 2014 to briefly discuss report card grades.

GCHS has decided to hold only this one Parent-Teacher Night each year and to use PowerSchool as the main option for parents to access student grades. Because parents have the ability to access student grades on a 24-7 basis, report cards for the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Marking Periods will be mailed home only to those families that have specifically requested this option, in writing. They will, however, be emailed home to all parents who have a valid email address on file in our PowerSchool system.

SAT Prep

GCHS is coordinating multiple SAT Prep options this year. Currently, some of our students are taking a free SAT content course, offered at Gloucester City High School. We have been informed that more of our students will likely be able to enroll in another session at Gloucester High during the latter part of this year.

Students with access to the Naviance system have another SAT Prep option (Method Test Prep) available within their Naviance accounts.

In addition, GCHS is working with an outside provider to offer a strategy-based SAT prep course, for a fee. This course helps students develop a test-taking strategy to use when taking the SAT, and is designed to help them prepare for the November 2013 SAT administration. Although the course is already underway for this semester, you can contact the Guidance Office for more information about future sessions.

Post-Secondary Planning Process

The post-secondary planning process can be nerve-wracking in a sound economy. Last year proved very difficult, though eventually successful, for many families. Being proactive, thinking “outside the box,” and balancing fiscal projections with a big dollop of hopefulness are key elements in accomplishing any task, including career and college planning, in today’s world. The counseling staff of GCHS is available to help. In addition to focusing on earning good grades and improving test scores, seniors should, this autumn, search on the Internet, visit colleges (2 year, 4 year, public, private), meet with college reps visiting GCHS, go to college fairs, etc.

Lists of scholarships continue to be posted in classrooms, and on the school website.  Student athletes appying to NCAA Division I and II schools should contact Mrs.Buckland (female students) or Mr. Bakey (male students) for Clearinghouse information/applications if they have not already done so. ROTC  Scholarship deadlines vary by branch of service but usually occur in the fall. Internet resources include: www.collegeboard.com, www.fastweb.comwww.ncaa.org/cbsa, www.hesaa.org, www.mappingyourfuture.org, and www.finaid.org.

Applications…Seniors should complete their applications/request for transcripts  (blue for Naviance/electronic submission; yellow for traditional paper with mailing) and bring them to Guidance with any fees and $2.00 for postage for each (additional charges after eight) a MINIMUM of two weeks before deadlines.  If filing on line, the same timetable applies.  Students will be given information as to filing for financial aid in December.

The Guidance Office is now using the Naviance system to monitor document submission for college applications. This system will submit documents electronically to colleges for students who so choose. Plans are being developed to use the post-secondary career and college planning modules with underclassmen in the future.
