who stepped down in March.
Aside from his experience within the Rams’ program, Bunting brings a wealth of coaching experience to GCHS. He currently is the head coach of the Philadelphia Little Flyers, based out of Aston, PA, as well as head coach of the Hollydell Selects and the Durham Hockey Institute. A 1992 Gateway Regional High School graduate and a current member of Local 158 of the Philadelphia-area Carpenters Union, Bunting also coached the Hollydell Hurricanes Youth Club from 2007-2012.
“I’m pretty well connected with our program here and around South Jersey, and I feel very comfortable stepping in as the head coach,” said Bunting. “As an assistant coach, I’ve watched everything that Guy (Gaudreau) was able to accomplish. I’ll emulate some of his coaching techniques but at the same time implement my own coaching style.”
Bunting is particularly excited to step in with a strong senior class returning from last season’s team.
“This is one of the strongest group of seniors we’ve had here in the ice hockey program, and it should be an exciting season,” Bunting said.
Gaudreau compiled a won-loss record of 101-97-21 in his 11 campaigns. The Rams’ brightest moment came during the 2009-2010 season when they advanced to the NJSIAA Non-Public state championship game before losing to Delbarton.
The former coach – who is the father of NHL star Johnny Gaudreau of the Calgary Flames; his brother Matt, also a hockey standout; and sister Katie, a current GCHS senior — believes Bunting is the right coach at the right time for the GCHS program.
“Not only is Tom (Bunting) a great coach in developing skills, but he will try and develop these players to become responsible students and individuals. The Gloucester Catholic program is in tremendous hands.”
Athletic Director Pat Murphy also welcomes Bunting on board as the new head coach.
“Tom comes highly recommended by Guy Gaudreau and he has coached in our system,” Murphy commented. “He is familiar with our traditions and culture. We’re very excited to see him continue the high level of success that Guy (Gaudreau) enjoyed here the last several years.”
