Rams Capture 18th State Baseball Championship With Win Over Newark Academy

State championship baseball 2017TOMS RIVER — Congratulations to the Rams on winning their 18th state baseball championships after pounding Newark Academy 15-5 on June 10 at Toms River South.

Gloucester Catholic overcame four errors — there were 11 total in the game —¬† scored eight runs in the bottom of the first inning and overpowered Newark Academy.
The Rams (27-3), ranked No.3 in the state by NJ.com, had 10 hits. The Rams were aided by eight Newark Academy walks and five hit batters.

State Championsship Baseball 3Gloucester Catholic starter Angelo DeAngelis gave up two runs in the top of the first, but Gloucester Catholic responded nicely with eight runs on five hits.

In the first, Gloucester Catholic sent 12 hitters to the plate. The Rams parlayed five hits, two walks and three hit batsmen into a back-breaking, eight-run binge. Catcher Sam Punzi had a three-run triple in the first. Alex Persichetti, Kyle Pierman and Adam Bonomo also had run-scoring hits.

Pierman was the hitting star for Gloucester Catholic, He was two-for-four with two RBI.
