GCHS’ Alaina Silber Featured as South Jersey Top Teacher

Alaina Silber GraphicCongratulations to Gloucester Catholic’s own Alaina Silber, who was featured recently as a South Jersey Top Teacher by South Jersey Magazine.

As GCHS’s English and Religion teacher, Mrs. Silber understands the importance of service and spirituality as a part of student life and Gloucester Catholic’s mission. She has creatively helped students experience both components through classroom education and service activities within local communities.

She is the coordinator for Gloucester Catholic’s service and retreat program and introduces spirituality during retreats — whether that means learning about Latino culture, tackling subjects like racism and injustice, or helping at Cathedral Kitchen. Collectively, GCHS students performed over 6,040 service hours last year.

“We changed the service program recently where students perform service hours in school along with a majority of hours in the community,” said Mrs, Silber. “Juniors and

seniors do required independent service at 20 hours per year per student. Freshmen and sophomores take part in a service retreat, so we go as a class and perform volunteer hours within the community.”

Mrs. Silber first came to Gloucester Catholic in 2012 and 2013, when she was completing her master’s program in education while enrolled at Saint Joseph’s University. She is preparing to finish a second master’s in theology at The College of St. Elizabeth. She has taught full-time at Gloucester Catholic since the Fall of 2016.

“I was really surprised and excited to be featured among the Top Teachers,” said Mrs. Silber. “To be young and so new in my career, it’s awesome to be honored in this way.”

Matt Levin Named Gloucester Catholic Volleyball Coach

Matt Levin GCHSFormer Cherry Hill East assistant Matt Levin has been selected as Gloucester Catholic’s new girls’ volleyball coach, it was announced by GCHS Athletic Director Pat Murphy.

Levin, who takes over for long-time coach Pete Petersen, served recently as junior varsity coach for Cherry Hill East in 2018 while previously serving in the same position at Paul VI in 2017. He also has experience coaching volleyball with several other organizations in the Delaware Valley and in Massachusetts, where he attended college.

Matt, who earned his BA degree from Eastern Nazarene College in Quincy, MA, played collegiately at Eastern Nazarene as an outside and middle hitter.

“I’m excited to take over the program and meet the team,” said Levin. “The first thing we will do is establish guidelines, and then I will go right into teaching everyone the basics of the game. Our program will stress understanding and executing the basics – this will help us enjoy a lot of success.”

The Lady Rams’ program has enjoyed several playoff appearances in the past few seasons and hopes to continue their success starting with the Fall 2019 campaign.
