Dave Martin ’66, left, with GC classmate Mr. Robert Nark when coach Martin visited the school in 2013.

Former GCHS standout athlete Dave Martin, a long-time great South Jersey baseball coach at Cherry Hill East, has been elected to the Camden County Sports Hall of Fame.

Coach Martin will be honored by the Hall of Fame on October 29 at the Crowne Point Plaza in Cherry Hill along with 10 other indctees.

The 1966 Gloucester Catholic graduate excelled as one of the top pitchers in South Jersey in the 1960s, and followed a remarkable playing career with an equally impressive coaching career.

At GC Martin batted .334 and was a top-flight pitcher all four years. A highlight of his Gloucester Catholic career came against Camden Catholic when he struck out 19 batters and shut out the Irish 2-0 in a 1966 contest.

At Southern Illinois, he pitched in the 1970 College World Series, where his team finished as national runnerup to Southern California. Martin then signed as a free agent with the San Francisco Giants and spent a season at Decatur in Class “A” ball.

His success led to a teaching and coaching position at a then-new Cherry Hill East School — and the rest, as anyone will point out, is South Jersey history. Over the years, Martin’s teams won more than 500 career games, two South Jersey Group 4 championships (1988 and 1998), five Olympic Conference American Division titles and four titles in the old South Jersey North Conference. His Cougars also won the Diamond Classic in 1986 and 1992.

Tickets are available now for the Hall of Fame induction dinner. To purchase tickets, call (856) 401-2451 or email halloffame@camdencounty.com.

GC Alumni and Friends Visit Our Lady of Fatima Shrine

Our Lady of Fatima

The 2nd Annual GCHS Alumni and Friends Trip with Father Allain Caparas traveled this summer to Portugal, France, and Italy. One of the highlights of the trip was the opportunity to travel to the shrine of Our Lady of Fatima in Portugal. This picture was taken with Maria dos Santos — niece of the Fatima visionary, Sr. Lucia dos Santos — whose process for sainthood has been opened. Maria is 98 years old and lives across from where Sr. Lucia lived as a young girl.

GC Alum Patrick Harker ’77 Picked to Lead The Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia

MARCH 2, 2015

UDARF-Harker-12WASHINGTON — The Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia said Monday that it had named as its new president Patrick Harker, president of the University of Delaware.

Mr. Harker, 56, was trained as an engineer and has spent most of his career as an academic and a university administrator, an unusual background for a Fed official. He also has served on the board of the Philadelphia Fed for the last three years.

He will become president July 1, the Philadelphia Fed said in a statement. “His deep roots in the region, his distinguished career in academia, his drive for innovation, and his passion to make our region an economic engine for the future truly impressed our board,” said James E. Nevels, chairman of the Philadelphia Fed’s board and founder of the Swarthmore Group, an investment advisory firm.

As one of the 12 presidents of the Fed’s regional reserve banks, Mr. Harker will participate in the regular meetings of the Fed’s monetary policy committee. He also will serve as chief executive of an institution with hundreds of employees, including economic researchers and bank regulators. The reserve banks also help to operate the plumbing of the financial system, including the distribution of currency.

In recent decades, the reserve banks have mostly named presidents who hold doctorates in economics and often have worked inside the Fed system. That has led to concern in some quarters of a lack of diversity.

Mr. Harker, by contrast, holds a bachelor’s degree, a master’s degree and a doctorate in engineering, all from the University of Pennsylvania. He also holds a master’s in economics from the same institution. He joined Penn’s faculty in 1991 and became dean of its Wharton School in 2000. He moved to the University of Delaware in 2007.

“I am honored and excited,” Mr. Harker said in a statement. “I look forward to working with the bank’s dedicated staff to continue the Philadelphia Fed’s vital service to the district and the nation.”
