A _ Alumni AwardsGLOUCESTER — Alumni and friends of Gloucester Catholic High School were honored on Sunday, November 19, during the annual Communion Breakfast.

The Gloucester Catholic Alumni Association paid tribute to  the following award winners :

John and Jackie O’Donnell Award (This award is given annually to a graduate of Gloucester Catholic who demonstrates generous service to the Gloucester Catholic school community) 

Recipient: Nick Calio ’61

 

Dr. Frank & Catherine Kelly Award (This award is given annually to a friend of GCHS who through their good work brings honor and recognition to the school)

Recipient: Fr. Daniel Joyce, SJ

 

Thomas Stewart III Award (This is awarded to a Gloucester Catholic graduate that demonstrates selfless commitment and extraordinary service to the greater community.

Recipient: Rev. Vincent O’Malley ’63 C.M.


Thomas Iacovone Family Legacy Award (Given on a random basis to recognize someone who through their dedication and commitment to Gloucester Catholic through the years have left an indelible mark on the Gloucester Catholic Community)

Recipient: Diane Andaloro Brenner ’75

Former GC lacrosse stars Alex Petrongolo, Meg McLaughlin and Mary Kate Kane helped Cabrini College to a CSAC championship.

Former GC lacrosse stars Alex Petrongolo, Meg McLaughlin and Mary Kate Kane helped Cabrini  to a CSAC championship.

Gloucester Catholic alumna Alex Petrongolo, Meg McLaughlin, and Mary Kate Kane helped their Cabrini University women’s lacrosse team to the CSAC championship, qualifying Cabrini for the NCAA Tournament. Additionally, all three players were members of the Cabrini field hockey team, which also captured CSAC championship last fall.

Cara McHenry Honored on All-MAC Winter Sportsmanship Team

Cara McHenry ’13 was selected for the All-MAC Winter Sportsmanship Teams. She is the daughter of Mr. Pat McHenry and Mrs. Julie McHenry, both 1978 graduates.

Cara was a standout player for the Lady Rams prior to moving on to DeSales University, where she has played on the women’s basketball team as a guard.

Author Joe Gorman ’72 Returns to His Roots at GCHS

Joe Gorman, Gloucester Catholic High Class of 1972 and author of the book “Make Today Count,” returned to his alma mater on Thursday, March 2 to visit with current students and faculty.

John Yowler ’80 Elected to Gloucester County Sports Hall of Fame

Former Gloucester Catholic multi-sport star John Yowler will be among the 13 new inductees to the Gloucester CountyJohn Yowler

Sports Hall of Fame during the 37th Annual Induction Banquet on March 28, 2017 at Auletto’s Caterers in Almonesson, the Hall’s Executive Committee has announced.

Yowler, a 1980 graduate, was a premier pitcher on the Rams’ 1980 baseball team, which compiled a 24-0 record en route to a state championship and was voted the No. 1 team of the 20th century by the Courier-Post. He also starred on Gloucester Catholic’s football and basketball teams. Yowler currently serves as a pitching coach at Cumberland County College.

Additional inductees in the Class of 2017 include: Dan Antonelli (Clayton), John Yowler (Gloucester Catholic), Robert Eck (Pitman), Elmer Roane (Paulsboro), Joe Cipriano (Delsea), Christian Lynch (Kingsway), Terry Jefferys-Jacobs (Woodbury), Ginny Migliore-Murphy (Washington Twp.), Mike Lamb (Rowan College at Gloucester County), Karl Neiswender (Clearview), Bill Henry (Gateway), Linda Decker (West Deptford), and Typhanie Bates (Williamstown).

Former Lady Rams’ Star Mary Gedaka Is Big East “Rookie of the Week”

Villanova’s Mary Gedaka was named Big East Rookie of the Week.

Former Gloucester Catholic basketball star Mary Gedaka, who has collected 60 points and 34 rebounds to spark Villanova’s recent five-game win streak, has been selected Big East Conference “Rookie of the Week” for the week ending January 21.

Gedaka, daughter of GC coach Lisa Gedaka, averaged 14.7 points per game and 8.7 rebounds per contest in helping the Wildcats to a 3-0 week.

Her best performance of the week came at Butler on Friday, January 20, when she recorded her first career double-double with a career-high 20 points and a career-best 10 rebounds to go with four assists, two steals and a block. She scored four of the 20 points in overtime to help Villanova rally from a 22 point deficit to win the game.

In a victory at Xavier, Gedaka scored a game-high 18 points on 9-of-14 shooting. She also added eight rebounds (six offensive) and two assists.

  • Thomas Stewart III Award (This is awarded to a Gloucester Catholic graduate that demonstrates selfless commitment and extraordinary service to the greater community. Recipient: Sen. Fred Madden ‘72

American FlagGloucester Catholic junior Tino Capone is undertaking a new project, the “Armed Forces Alumni Wall of Honor,” in which Ram alumni who have served in the Armed Forces or who are currently enlisted will be honored.

Agnus McGlade Berenato ’75 Named Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Kennesaw State University

Agnus McGlade Berenato, a 1975 Gloucester Catholic graduate, has been named head women’s basketball coach at Agnus-Berenato-9Kennesaw State University in Georgia.
